The Great Return: Living and Healing with Chronic Illness
Chronic disease is a health condition or illness that is long-lasting. In my practice, I work with people living with both mental and physical chronic conditions: disordered eating, depression, chronic stress, pain, neuropathy, and many others.
Recovery is often described as a simple pathway: investigate, find the cause, cure it, then treat the symptoms.
But for many of my clients, the road is far more complex.
Endless investigations may find no clear cause. And where there is no cause, how do you find a cure? Treatment becomes about symptom management. Unknown cause, unknown cure, ongoing treatment, an illness that lingers.
Anger - Fear - Frustration - Loneliness.
This kind of chronic illness, with its wide and unpredictable spectrum of symptoms, can slowly take away a life once known. The body or mind can begin to feel like a prison. Life shrinks. Mobility is limited. Isolation grows. Sometimes, there’s even a longing to escape it all.
When I meet these clients, I want to hear everything. Leave nothing out, I say. I want to know how to meet you exactly where you are. Tell me the good, the bad, and the goddamn ugly. Let me into your world. Walk me through the landscape.
Together, we make a map.
We name the terrain. We mark places of significance. We put a pin in the deepest, darkest well. We track the high and low tides of emotion. We meet the symptoms as they are. We rest, when needed, in the pit of despair.
And then, when the timing is right, guided by the wisdom and compass of the body, we begin to orient toward the light. Through solid ground, steady breath, and the hope gathered along the way, we find the path.
Eventually, we arrive at the Great Return: a place where things are slow, gentle, and paced. Where we come home to ourselves, to one another, and to what matters most.
Recovery is not a one size fits all, it’s personal and individual. If this speaks to your experience, you don’t have to do it alone. Let’s make time to explore, to listen, and to move at the speed your system requires.
